The information in this session guide will make it easy for you to get ready for your session so all you need to do is enjoy the family time and LOVE the results!
What should we wear for our Cairns Studio Family photography Experience?
Coordinate your style.
When planning for a family photography session, one of the most important decisions to make is what to wear. Clothing can greatly impact the final outcome of the photographs, as it compliments who you are as a family, the environment in which the session is taking place, and coordinates with the home where final images will be displayed. Your style should be as unique as your family, so we’ve put together some clothing advice for a creative, comfortable session. First and foremost, it is important to keep it simple. Plan your outfit a few days before your session and coordinate your wardrobe.
Stay away from distracting patterns and logos.
Your photographys are meant to showcase the personal connection that you have between your family members. So any sort of distracting clothing is going to take away from that. Stay away from any sort of graphic Ts with crazy big logos on them, or anything that’s way too busy like plaid.
Coordinate your tones.
Most people tend to overthink the style of the clothing…and to be honest anything other than the simplest of clothes will tend to show the photography’s age as time goes on. We want to achieve a timeless look so no one comes over to our home in 20 years and makes fun of our outfits that are clearly out of style. You don’t have to do the matchy matchy thing where everyone’s wearing the exact same shirt, but I highly recommend you coordinate your colors. To keep it simple I always suggest choosing either black or white clothing for everyone. Do not mix dark colors with light colors…the people wearing light colors will always stand out and be distracting.
Prepping the kids
If you have a young child, try to schedule the session around their naptime so they will be well rested and happy for photos.
We recommend feeding your child before the session and pack snacks just in case hunger strikes again while we’re shooting!
Outfit changes for little ones
Bring more than one outfit. Make sure you always have backup clothes just in case. And we suggest that you don’t change your child into their session clothing until after you have fed them. Also, be very careful with drinks, as well only clear liquids in a safe cup.
Let your child help when picking out their clothes for the session. By letting your child wear his favorite shirt or shoes, etc. this will help him feel more comfortable. If his choice of clothing isn’t want you want or doesn’t match, see if you can use that shirt as an undershirt or tell him he can put it on for a couple of shots at the end of the session.
Bring along their favorite toy or blanket. This will help your child be comfortable in a new, unfamiliar surrounding. Just be aware that this will probably become a prop in some of the photos, so bring something that is pleasing to the eyes or has sentimental value and you’d be okay with photos of it.
Talk to your child about the session and explain what’s going to happen. If your child is informed about the situation, it will be less scary for them when they comes to the session. Tell them that they is going to meet a new friend who is going to take some pictures of them. Let them know that you’ll be there with them and that we are going to have lots of fun.
I feel a bit awkward in front of the camera. How do you help?
Don’t worry at all! Our Cairns Studio Family photography goal is to capture the natural interactions and unposed moments between you all and we have plenty of tricks up our sleeves to make this happen! We will encourage authentic expressions, rather than coaxing fake smiles.
Here are some tips to help you create more candid shots during your session: Interact playfully with your children. Laugh, play, tickle, and snuggle. This is how we’ll capture the REAL moments. Not everyone has to be looking at the camera. Let your children play and interact naturally while we capture the moment. Instead of asking everyone to say “cheese” or look directly at the camera, we’ll be encouraging you to smile and look at each other lovingly.
After the first few minutes, you’ll find it easier to relax and have fun. And the more comfortable and at ease you are, the more natural and authentic your photos will be. Remember, the goal is to capture the unique personalities and relationships within your family. By following these tips, we can work together to create beautiful and timeless images that truly reflect who you are as a family.
Have fun!
When it comes to photography sessions, the most important thing is to capture the true essence of you and your family. Don’t be afraid to be yourselves and have fun! Don’t be afraid to pick up your children and toss them in the air, give your partner a sweet kiss on the cheek, tell your partner how much you love and appreciate them for being there for your family, give your dog a cuddle, have fun, giggle, joke, embrace and play. This will allow me to capture the emotion and true beauty of your family.
